Finding Happiness by Giving Back

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

― Ghandi

Many people wonder what they can do to become happy, caught in a cycle of trying to stay motivated and love themselves. Often people overlook one of the best ways to bring true happiness into their lives. Serving others is often seen as a mundane activity, and unfortunately, many people do not want to spend their time doing things that will not immediately and directly serve them. In reality, community service is a great opportunity to not only bring together people of a community, but also to increase your self-esteem, make new friends, learn new skills, network, and even maintain your own happiness level.

Connecting to others through volunteering is a unique experience.

Getting involved and volunteering provides a very unique standpoint. Everyone who is volunteering is on the same level, no matter what their level of personal success may be. Each person forms a part of a group that is working to better the world. The most unique friendships can be formed as a result of this. Each person comes away knowing that they did their part in helping out someone in need. It is an exceptional experience that provides a feeling of satisfaction, contentment, and happiness on the deepest level.

Volunteering and charity are great ways to spread happiness in your community.

There are many things that you can do to get involved in your community or in other communities globally. You can volunteer at a local food bank or food drive, volunteer at animal shelters, help clean up a natural disaster, or even volunteer to go on mission trips to other countries. Sometimes helping others isn’t fun. Take helping neighbors clean up their yards or offering to pick up trash around the community for instance. You can make it fun by recruiting other people to help. You also get to enjoy the finished result of a clean neighborhood.

There are also some more creative ways to give back. One fun way to serve others is by volunteering to teach a class at a community center or help with art classes and other fun activities with children or people who may have special needs. Another deeply fulfilling way to help out is to volunteer at a nursing home or spend time with an elderly or disabled neighbor. Often elderly people spend most of their day at home and are extremely lonely and want some human interaction. These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to things that you can do to give back. Think about what you enjoy doing or what you are good at and brainstorm ways to use that to volunteer. All you need is a little creativity, and the possibilities are endless.

Serving others is important to your personal happiness.

We are all human, and that is why serving others is so important. It not only humbles us but also provides an invaluable sense of self-worth, the type that only comes from giving back. Service to others teaches us to be grateful for what we have in this life and to not take simple things for granted. It can also teach us not to judge others who, despite their circumstances, may still very well be great people. Taking the initiative and making the first step to find a great organization to work with is the first step towards entering a new world with not only a sense of community but a sense of pride and joy as well.
